Introduction to Landscape Outdoor LightingHere we describe the different types and applications of lanscape outdoor lighting. Landscape and Garden Lighting The purpose of landscape lighting and garden lighting is to highlight your landscape and garden so it looks as beautiful at night as it does during the day. You can use low voltage lights that are strategically installed to illuminate trees, shrubs, flower beds, and gardens. Another popular option is "moonlighting". This creates a serene look by using tree lighting that gives a subtle lighting effect in the tops of trees. Landscape lighting & solar energy panelsAs solar panels become smaller and cheaper, they are becoming more popular for landscape outdoor lighting applications. The main benefit is that solar powered lights do not need any wiring and are therefore simple to install and can be easily moved around to different spots. The major downside is that they are dependent upon sunshine to work. If you have a series of cloudy days, the lights will only work for a short period, or perhaps not at all, before the battery runs out How solar energy panels work A solar energy panel collects energy from the sunlight and converts it into direct current
Save Power With Solar Garden LightingYou can choose from many different types of landscape lighting. If you are interested in conserving energy, low voltage landscape lighting is one option. However, for conserving energy solar landscape lighting is the best because the energy comes for free. Solar lighting is powered from sunlight and it stores energy during the day while the sun is shining. Once it gets dark enough, the lights come on automatically using this stored energy. They give out a gentle glow that is best for ambient lighting of lighting up a small area (they're not so good for large areas). Solar landscape lighting is a fun and cost effective way to light your yard. Find out more about outdoor lighting at www.landscapeoutdoorlighting.com
Manor House Landscape LightingA popular, traditional style of outdoor landscape light is the so-called "Manor House Light" and of course there is also a company with the Manor House brand name. This style of landscape light is also offered by other manufacturers such as Hinkley Lighting. An example of a manor house style, outdoor wall lantern is shown below. My opinion is manor house lighting looks best mounted on walls framing entrance doors, or on poles framing a garden, or driveway entrance. Used too much though it can look overdone.
Improve Security & Save Power With Lighting ControllersMost landscape lighting systems now use a lighting controller with a timer that shuts your garden lights off at night (to save power and avoid disturbing neighbors). Some systems will also let you select an option to maintain your lights at a reduced power setting, so you have a soft glow rather than full illumination. Many systems also include a motion sensor in the control system. When the motion sensor is activated, it fully illuminates the lights for a pre-selected amount of time. This performs 2 functions: It either advises you that there is someone on your property. In this situation the motion sensor fully illuminates the lights to alert
